What do we mean by "Evangelical?"

It is an interesting fact of life that the meanings of words (particularly in English) change over time. If we go back in time to find the meaning of the word "Evangelical" as it would have been when it was carved in the corner stones of many older church buildings it means something like is found in the 1959 Funk & Wagnals:

"2) holding or conforming to what the majority of Protestants regard as the fundamental doctrines of the Gospel, such as personal union with Christ, the Trinity, the fallen condition of man, Christ's atonement for sin, salvation by faith, not works, and regeneration by the Holy Spirit."

When I challenged Presiding Bishop Mark Hanson's remarks about an "Evangelical Episcopate" as being an oxymoron, he denied this definition instead pointing ot the modern usage of "being of service to the Gospel."

Therefore, we should note that the ELCA is no longer Evangelical as have historically meant the word to mean.
