The Book of Concord in English and in the
Original Languages
Available English Editions
and Sources for Purchase
The Concordia Triglotta.
An older, but still reliable, English translation
that some prefer to more modern translations. It also
contains the the original Latin and German texts of the
Book of Concord, all presented in three columns: German,
Latin and English. BookofConcord.org uses the English
text from the Triglotta edition because these texts are
in the public domain and no longer under copyright.
Another important advantage of this edition is the extensive,
though dated, historical introductions to all the documents
that is nowhere else avaialble at present time in English.
Wengert-Kolb, The Book of Concord.
A significant revision and
update of the Tappert translation, incorporating numerous
footnotes and longer historical introductions. It is the
most modern English translation presently available. Supplemental
volumes are being prepared for this edition providing
supporting documents and more extensive historical introductions.
Theodore Tappert, The Book of Concord.
A 1950s era English translation. Widely
used in English speaking circles until the release of
the newest English translation in 2000. It is the least
expensive English edition available.
Henry Eyster Jacobs, The Book of
Concord. This is the oldest English translation
available. Its English translation was foundational for
the Triglotta edition. It has been reprinted in recent
years and copies are available from Bethany Lutheran College
Bookstore. The advantage of this edition is in the supplemental
volume that contains numerous supporting documents for
the Book of Concord. A number of these documents are available
nowhere else in English.

The Book of Concord
in the Original Languages
The documents in the Book of Concord were
originally written either in Latin or German, or both.
The best critical edition of the Book of Concord is titled
Die Bekenntnisschriften der evangelisch-lutherischen
Kirche. Which, being translated is, "The Confessional
Writings of the Evangelical Lutheran Church." You
may purchase a copy of the BKS (as it is commonly abbreviated),
from Germany, for instance from Amazon's German affiliate,
Amazon.de,
or from seminary bookstores in the United States. The
price to purchase a copy directly from Germany is about
the same as purchasing a copy from a US seminary bookstore,
though it will take you more time to receive it. You may
also obtain a copy from Concordia Theological Seminary
Bookstore by calling 1-219-452-2100 or Concordia Seminary
Bookstore at 1-314-505-7000. You may also find a used
copy at Bookfinder.com.
The most recent translation of the Book of Concord, the
Wengert/Kolb translation, is based on the Bekenntnisschriften
edition, as was the Tappert translation. The latest printing
of the Bekenntnisschriften is the 1998, 12th edition.
